But, to learn more about who Nick really is, read this brief historical background and find out how he made a name for himself...seriously, he literally made up the name. Curious? Click HERE.
Born in west Tennessee, he'd dreamed of being a radio DJ since his pre-teens. By his mid-teens, Nick was getting a small taste of radio by recording a high school drug prevention spot (just say "no") at a local rock station. But he got his first real break on the air at the age of 19 -- his first radio job at WDTM in Selmer, TN. After little more than 2 years there, during which time he was also serving in the U.S. Army National Guard, he moved to Georgia...and found the radio market a bit tougher to get into.
Nick spent 8 years going from job to job before finding a place in radio again. This time, it was at WIMO in Winder, GA. For about 5 and ½ years, Nick found a home there, and he still has great respect for the station's more than half a century of history.
Sommers started out as the weekday "morning guy" at WIMO, on the Nixter Morning Show. Later, Nick moved to the afternoon slot from 2-5pm. He hosted Trading Time and delivered the daily Community Calendar News. With experience at News, Sports, and many other events for the station, the "Nixter" was an important part of WIMO's staff until mid-2005.
Nick currently resides in Winder, GA, with his brother. He also has 2 sisters -- one lives in Marietta, GA, and the other's home is in Nashville, TN. His parents still live in the west Tennessee town of Selmer, in McNairy County -- historically known for its former Sheriff, the late Buford Pusser. Nick grew up in the small town of Adamsville, just 13 miles east of Selmer, and he played football 4 years for the Adamsville High School Cardinals.
Sommers was 22 when he moved from his west Tennessee home to the metro-Atlanta area. After several years in Gwinnett County, Nick decided it was too crowded there and moved into Barrow County. He married at age 27, but then divorced when he was 30. Nick has no children, but he does have a black-and-white tuxedo cat known as "the CK" (the Cool Kitty).
The Nixter can now be heard on HoundDogRadio.net each Friday from 5 to 9pm (Eastern Time). The Internet radio show he hosts is called Friday Night Fusion, featuring a music mix of his own choosing. Co-hosting with him is his long-time friend, Cory (known as "Captain Cranky"). Nick is also currently serving as the station's Production Manager.
